Eastern style Experimental Plan

Introduction

Eastern horror film have the special spirit showing way, give audience more space to imagine. The Eastern director would like to show some hint from the atmosphere and mentality when making a horror film. Sometimes in Eastern, you could feel the horror, but can`t see it, just like the film Twin Sisters(Korea), beautiful and cold, the horror is just the shadow in this atmosphere, no communication, abnormal. So this time I will make out a horror film which to create a special background to show the atmosphere. And try to find out the marrow of Eastern horror.

Eastern culture

Because of Eastern people believe in Buddhism, the story of Eastern horror films are mainly made by the revenge of the ghost and karma. Also, the rumor of ghost is from the legend and myth. The ghost`s main killing way will be curse and frighten. So the ghost will be using in the film.

Character

The main character in horror films which from Eastern will mainly be female. This also due to the culture. In Eastern, especially in Japan, people believe that the holy woman has the high power, so the devil woman have the higher ability of imprecation . So the Main character will be the woman.

The information which I am showing above is the eastern style using. There are also some important part to be noticed of the film, such as sound, lighting and color... but those techniques are quite similar to Western style, so I just do the normal plan of them.

From Horror History

At this time, horror film becomes famous. Because it not only release people but also explain some unknown effect by kinds of techniques.

How to analyse Horror

I find out an interesting website, telling about how to analyse horror films, it`s good to have a read, so I just copy it from the website.

    • 1
Watch the movie and notice any recurring elements, such as when people experience the horror. For example, people often wander away from the group in horror movies, only to experience a supernatural fright or an attack. Notice whether the "horror" of the movie is natural or supernatural, human or not, and listen for any explanation of why the horror is happening.
    • 2
Examine the movie as an example of the horror genre. To do this, research the history of horror films, especially looking at trends in horror movies over the decades and at innovations of individual films. Watch horror movies from across the century and read books like "Projected Fears: Horror Films and American Culture" by Kendall R. Phillips that record elements of the genre's history.
    • 3
Work with what you can observe as you analyze. The horror genre often uses metaphor and symbol, even when the director or writer didn't necessarily plan it that way. Focus on the repeating elements that seem important to you, or on scenes that you thought were especially good.
    • 4
Link the ideas of the movie to historical or contemporary events. The horror genre allows filmmakers to comment on these events without being overt about their politics. For example, the classic horror film "Night of the Living Dead" uses the community reaction to zombies to explore race issues and group conformity.
    • 5
Analyze the sexuality of the movie. Horror movies are often about sexuality, so this topic can provide rich analysis. Think about both metaphor and actual plot as you analyze sexuality. Vampire films are classic examples of sexuality in horror films, as the vampires are often aroused by beautiful women, but their only expression of this desire is to drink the women's blood.
    • 6
Use Jungian archetypes to analyze the movie by examining how filmmakers tap the collective unconscious to create meaning in the horror genre. In this analysis, horror movies contain the same loaded imagery as do our nightmares. The book "Psychological Reflection on Cinematic Terror" by James Iaccino introduces a full range of Jungian archetypes and how they apply to horror movies.
    • 7
Apply a feminist analysis to the horror movie by examining the function of gender within the film, as well as the power that women (or females) hold. For example, often women are the victims of the monster of the movie, but in other movies, the woman is herself the monster. Seek out what this might mean about the power that women hold in real life, and what cultural ideas about it might be. You can also look at the way individual scenes are shot as you apply a feminist analysis.
    • 8
Write down your analysis, even if it's just to discuss with friends later. The best analysis of a horror movie needs details. If you don't write them down, you might forget some of your points.

New schedule-- sound, background and emotional appeal

Flickering Light Bulbs

  • Constant flickering of the light bulbs in a room creates the feeling of a ghost or an electrical disturbance, according to the Yard Haunters website. Lighting controllers are easily installed to vary the electricity run to lamps and light fixtures, creating a random pattern of flickering and dimming. Sound reactive devices can also be used to control the effect based on the wail of a ghost or the footsteps of visitors. Specialty light bulbs designed to flicker randomly can also be found, but they can blow in the middle of a movie scene or haunted house tour and usually have a very short service life.

Lightning Flashes

  • As the thunder of a spooky storm rolls in, lightning should also flash. But creating the right split-second flash of bright light can be trickier than you think, especially when you want to align it perfectly with a sound effect. Wolfstone's Haunted Halloween website says that there are a number of sound-reactive lightning lighting effect controllers available that trigger a short, bright flash when a specific sound is heard. Some models feature direct wiring to prevent laughter or other sounds from setting off the flash. Anyone who is comfortable with electrical wiring and working with circuit boards can also create their own lightning controller.

Black Light

  • Black lights are special bulbs or lamps designed to emit ultra violet light that the human eye can barely see, according to the University of Illinois Department of Physics. While these lights don't add very much visible light to brighten a room, some ultra violet reactive materials or paints will glow white or a pale shade of green or yellow when exposed. Black lights are an easy way to create a ghostly apparition in a room by flooding the area with ultra violent light, then slowly moving a wispy UV reactive figure across the scene. The dim, violet color of the light a black light does emit can be disorientating or create strange looking shadows that add to the spooky atmosphere.

Strobe Lights

  • Bright, repetitive flashing is the most common mode of lighting offered by a strobe light. If no other lighting is used, the constant change between bright light and total darkness will confuse visitors of a haunted house or viewers of a horror movie say the experts at Animated Lighting. Taking advantage of their distracted state is easy and allows for a bigger reaction to a quick moving prop or sudden appearance of a startling character. The confusion of watching a scene or standing in a room with a strobe light flashing also allows for mimed violent acts to look more realistic.

Horror History-- Western

In Western, horror film is a huge part of the film industry, film was born in 1895, in the second year, the first horror style film had become to face to audience.

If you had read the history of Western horror, you could easily find out an interesting thing, that the horror style changes in almost every 10 years from 1930 to 1980.

Before 1930s, horror film is not the main part of film styles, filmmakers would like to recompose some living theatres more. But there are two famous films shows in 1931, which name is Dracula and FrankensteinThese two films opens the golden time of horror.

In 1940s, the famous horror film includes Man Made Monster(George Waggner) and  I Walked with a Zombie(Jacques Tourneur). In these 10 years, the filmmakers puts their notice on recomposing some cartoons or tales.

In 1950s, nuclear threat and Communist infiltration appears in Western, horror film style broke away from ghost and monsters which shows earlier, but to combined with some science fiction and the extra-terrestrial.

In 1960s, horror filmmakers starts to describe some horror effects which shows on human beings such as Psycho (1960).

In the year 1973, the film The Exorcist starts to tell audience that the monsters are coming back. Some films which describe monsters such as The Omen (1976) and Carrie (1976) appears to screen.

In 1980s, the horror filmmakers starts to combine sex and violence, and put these elements on women and juveniles, such as the film Dressed to kill (1980) and Trick or Treats. In the end, they successfully made out a kind of society phobia. On another hand, some unknown things on outer space and technology productions appears, such as Star Beast and The fly.

What I want to say is, every era has its own characteristic, so does horror. Sometimes the social effect could change the horror style, because this is the audience`s demand, also, a different horror style could change audience`s viewpoint.

To conclusion, though the Eastern horror history are not to long, but I believe that the theory which I have told is same. Every era have their own production, so in the future, compare with globalization, the style of horror maybe could be similar and even same in Eastern and Western.
